About Los Alamitos

Nestled in sunny Southern California, you will find the small, charming city of Los Alamitos. Los Al, as it's known to locals, is nestled in the northern part of Orange County and is just a short distance from such larger cities as Los Angeles, Anaheim, and Long Beach.

Although the first persons to inhabit the territory known as Los Alamitos, which translates to “The Little Cottonwoods,” today were the native Puvu peoples, Spaniards took control of the village around 1769. A man by the name of Don Manuel Nieto was granted the land along with some of the surrounding territory. Upon his death, Nieto's land was divided among his children.

The land in the Los Alamitos area was used to graze cattle; however, during the drought of 1863-64, the ranch lost nearly its entire herd. The land switched hands over the next several decades until a man named Senator Clark began planning a town for the area. By 1896, the Clark's town consisted of a sugar refinery, school, recreation building, two hotels, a general store and several private homes.

Following Pearl Harbor, the United States Navy moved their training field to Los Alamitos, where Navy and Marine flyers were trained. After World War II ended, the base was used for reserve training, then was reactivated for the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. The Navy later turned the base over to the California National Guard and now the Joint Forces Training Base serves as a reserve training center for all branches of the military.

The township of Los Alamitos became incorporated in 1960 and combines a small-town ambience with excellent schools and a high quality of life to ensure that the city is a nice place to live, visit and conduct business.
